Laubu Mesa is an isolated city on the Pact Worlds system planet of Castrovel. Perched atop the geological feature sharing its name, this desert settlement has achieved renown for never succumbing to conquest. In ancient times, the city's Aeries, crowned with minarets, served as the dwelling places for the thakasa riders—cavalry adept at riding winged versions of the planet's famed reptilian shotalashu mounts. In contemporary times, these same flight schools have evolved to produce some of the most skilled fighter pilots in the system, specializing in audacious proximity flying and other daring atmospheric maneuvers.

Utilizing technomagical pumps, the city ensures self-sufficiency by drawing water and geothermal energy up through the heart of the mesa—preparing for potential sieges. The Scholar's Spiral, winding around the pumps, harbors workshops and libraries passed down from master to student over millennia. Rumors circulate about hidden treasures and encrypted knowledge concealed behind secret doors within this historical repository.
