Altipherons are starship-sized colonial Swarm components that serve as picket ships. Quick and cheap to construct, altipherons are often deployed around planets currently consumed by the Swarm to repel would-be liberators, and can also be used as transports, holding Swarm components in their hold. Due to their shared hive mind, altipherons are capable of unmatched teamwork, and a group of them can be easily more dangerous than a larger ship. Altipherons are incapable of Drift travel, and are incorporated into bigger ships when the Swarm needs to move ot another solar system.
