The First Ones are a near-mythical group of beings who are said to have come to the planet Aballon in the Pact Worlds system thousands of years before the Gap and created the precurser servitor robots that over time evolved to become the anacites.1 Most of the species of the galaxy have forgotten the First Ones, and consider the anacites to be the only species of Aballon.2
History
The First Ones are said to have come to Aballon millennia before the Gap in order to harvest its mineral resources. They created giant, automated forge complexes to produce the self-improving and self-replicating precursors of the anacites in order to mine and process the extracted materials. They also built nine giant cities whose ruins can still be found dotted around Aballon; they are known today as Boundless, Constant, Continuum, Enduring, Eternity, Infinity, Myriad, Timeless, and Ubiquity. The First Ones remained on Aballon for an extended period of time and then left; they have never been seen or heard from again.3 Although no one can say for certain where they disappeared to, some claim that they are one of the Deep Cultures living in the interior of the Sun.4
Those Who Wait and Those Who Become
The robotic servants of the First Ones continued to self-replicate and improve themselves after their departure, eventually achieving sentience millennia ago. Aware of their departed progenitors, they broke into two major factions whose entire philosophy is based on their understanding of the First Ones; these factions still exist today. The first of these, called Those Who Wait, believe that the First Ones will eventually return, and that anacites should stay on Aballon to continue the job given their non-sentient forebearers: mining, amassing knowledge, and developing the planet. The second faction, Those Who Become, assume that the First Ones want them to emulate their own behavior and colonize other worlds.5 The abandoned cities of the First Ones became taboo to enter for both groups, a tradition that goes back thousands of years, and one that has only recently been circumvented by the hiring out non-anacites to explore them.6
Remnants of the First Ones
In addition to their mysterious, abandoned cities that each defy logic in a different way (see above), the First Ones also left behind automated forges that once produced the precursor robots of the anacites. These forges still exist today, and now continue to manufacture anacites.7
Temple of the First Ones
The Temple of the First Ones is a religious building located in the bubble-city of Corona on the Burning Archipelago where anacites gather to worship the First Ones as their creators as well as the creators of the Burning Archipelago.8 Some efreet who live there claim that the First Ones still live hidden deep beneath the surface of the Sun, but others think they are lying.4
Footprint of the First Ones
The Footprint of the First Ones is a larger asteroids in the Diaspora that was once part of one of the historical planet Iovo's moons. An abandoned and dormant forge of the First Ones can still be found upon it, but it remains sealed and resistant to any scans of its interior.9
Sharpwings
The sharpwings are one of the few non-robotic species native to Aballon, found only in the planet's Ice Wells. Some scientists claim that their genetic code shows signs of having been manipulated eons ago by the First Ones.10
