Photonic anomalies are a bizarre species of extremely rare, poorly-known, starship-sized creatures that live within stars.1

Ecology

A photonic anomaly is created in a star when the trajectories of at least two gamma rays happen to match perfectly. It then continues to dart randomly around the star, combining with protophotons or gamma ray clusters that travel nearby in the same direction. Over millions of years, the photonic anomaly grows to the size of a starship. Photonic anomalies move chaotically, rarely interacting with others, and have been seen materialising near unusual stellar phenomena.1

Photonic anomalies cannot survive outside of stars. If one moves out of the star's atmosphere, it loses cohesion and erupts into a luminous, high-energy burst of radiation, which can be mistaken as a supernova by those who live near the star.1
