Squox
Squox is the common name used by humans to refer to the vulkariki, a species of mammals that combine the qualities of foxes and squirrels. Native to Castrovel, they have since spread across the Pact Worlds system, and are popular as pets and animal companions.1
Appearance
Squoxes measure roughly 2 feet in length and weigh 15 pounds. They are quadrupedal and can climb surfaces headfirst due to their prehensible paws with five fingers and rotating wrists and ankles. Their head is flattened, their snout pointed and their tail bushy like a fox. Their fur is normally red, orange, brown or white, with white patches on the belly, tail tip and neck, and can adapt to each individual squox's habitat.1
Ecology
Squoxes are among the most intelligent animals in the Pact Worlds. They live in groups with strict hierarchies, and are clever enough to poke or bite sensitive regions and steal objects to bait enemies in battle. Squoxes mature at 10 months, breed quickly and can live up to 10 years in the wild, or double that in captivity. Squoxes are easily trainable due to their intelligence, loyal, protective, charming and mischievous, making them appropriate as companions for children.1
Society
Due to their adaptability and adorable features, squoxes became popular pets, and the lashuntas of Asana, who see them as pests, happily exported them. Over centuries, squoxes have adapted to various biomes across the Pact Worlds, and have even spread to the Veskarium and the Vast. A month-old, just-weaned squox kit can be purchased for 100 credits, and a fully trained one can fetch 400 credits. While the Xenowardens seek to protect the native population on Castrovel, they also cull wild squoxes on other planets and promote laws that control their importation and release into the wild, in an effort to protect native ecosystems from them.1
