The Verdant Shield is a violent ecoterrorist group who seek to defend the wildlife across the Pact Worlds from exploitation by any means necessary.

History

The Verdant Shield was founded by the lashunta teenager Shirini Odas and some of her like-minded friends, after she heard the latest report of a Castrovelian animal species being endangered. In order to protect the animals, they began uploading holovids of their manifesto and petitions across numerous infospheres while keeping their identity secret. The Verdant Shield grew in power and scope and made a positive impact, but their anonymity eventually caused the founders to lose control of the group to the extremist members. Recently, unknown to Shirini and the rank-and-file members, the mysterious hacker Gr1m_R4nger has taken control of the entire Verdant Shield.

Goal

The Verdant Shield states their goal to be ending animal exploitation across the galaxy through all means necessary, including bloody raids and bombings without regard for collateral damage. However, Gr1m_R4nger only wants credits, and often extorts vast sums of money from corporations if they do not want the Verdant Shield unleashed upon them. After a few incidents of property destruction and murders of hunters and security, most companies acquiesce to Gr1m_R4nger's demands.

Structure

The Verdant Shield is divided in small, independent cells consisting of less than a dozen volunteers each. Each Pact World with native fauna is home to at least one cell, with the majority being based on Castrovel. A few cells organise and execute their own plans, but most are conrolled by Gr1m_R4nger, who select targets and direct cells to these opportunities, using false information and puppet accounts to make them appear to come from trusted fellow members. Due to the Verdant Shield's extremist nature, most cells do not last long, but are constantly replaced by new ones that spring from Gr1m_R4nger's viral messaging.

The Verdant Shield funds their operations through their own money, anonymous donations or by fencing items stolen during their operations. They tend to keep their money on handy credsticks.

Holdings

Each Verdant Shield cell has its own secret headquarters, usually located in basements and abandoned warehouses. When targeted by local law enforcement, they either move to another base or are either killed or arrested. Gr1m_R4nger's location is carefully kept unknown, and is speculated to be a starship, due to the ease by which they could assert their demands to corporations. Credits that Gr1m_R4nger blackmails from companies are constantly moved around bank accounts, leaving behind a trail of nonexistent businesses and account holders.

Relationships

Though some view the Verdant Shield as noble, most people see them as dangerous terrorists and frequently condemn them in public. They have faced off against numerous enemies, from illegal poachers to legal corporations as well as all kinds of law enforcement. The Stewards view them as high-profile terrorists, but have difficulty eliminating their scattered cells. The Xenowardens frown upon their violence and would want to rehabilitate them. Shirini Odas has recently rejoined the Verdant Shield, seeking to turn it back to its original goal, but she is unaware of Gr1m_R4nger's extensive control.
