Paraforan
Paraforans, colloquially known as Drift moths, are mysterious crystalline outsiders from the Drift who feed upon the energy given off in the wake of starships and creatures moving between the Drift and the Material Plane.1
Appearance
Juvenile paraforans, known as fragments, are small crystalline fragments that flit across the Drift. Adult ones have a larger wingspan and a feathery tail of polychromatic light. When a paraforan heals itself with its fragments' regenerative power, it glows brightly enough to temporarily blind nearby creatures.1
Ecology
It is unknown how paraforans are born or reproduce; some speculate that they simply coalesce out of the Drift's clouds of unusual planar energy. Paraforan fragments seek Drift engine energy to consume, and can inflict painful psychic interference but are easily mollified by fascinating effects. When at least six gather in the same place in the Drift (usually near a Drift beacon), they begin to synchronise and meld into an adult paraforan. Paraforans retain their fragments' consciousnesses, increasing their intelligence and psychic power.1
Habitat
Paraforans, both fragments and adults, can sense Drift beacons and engines, and flock there in the hope of finding a starship. Travellers often speak of mysterious crystalline formations floating near them when they return to the Material Plane, or of flashes of colour rushing past them when their ship jumps. These paraforans can be dragged alongside the ship, in a turbulent and violent passage that often splits them into fragments. Sometimes, a paraforan or fragments might appear inside a starship that has just made a jump; this is disorienting for them, causing them to try to flee the vessel while attacking anything in the way. On the Material Plane, paraforans have difficulty feeding off Drift beacons and are rarely pulled alongside a ship that jumps into the Drift. Eventually, these paraforans stiffen, lose colour and starve. Their corpses can then be constructed into paraforan resonators and attached to Drift engines.1
Paraforans have never been seen near Absalom Station, possibly because of the sheer energy generated by the Starstone that vaporises any paraforan that attempts to feed upon it.1
