Calaphidion
Calaphidions are a species of immense insect-like animals that dwell in space and are sometimes grown as livestock.1
Appearance
Calaphidions' bulbous bodies are covered in photosynthetic cells, which collect energy from distant stars. Two hard, chitinous horns extend from the sides of their head.1
Ecology
Calaphidions sustain themselves through both photosynthesis and a diet of ice and dust. They reproduce quickly and bear live young, which can lead to infestations in particularly good conditions. Though not particularly intelligent, calaphidions have a herd instinct, working as a group to tear apart any starships or non-calaphidions that threaten them, unless placated. Calaphidion farmers cultivate this behaviour to help protect their herds.1
Habitat
Calaphidions spend most of their time grazing on comets, planetary rings and icy asteroids, usually paying attention to and being ignored by non-calaphidions, except predators and farmers.1
