Tashtari
Tashtaris, nicknamed by offworlders as laser wolves, are a species of bioluminescent pack-hunting predators native to Castrovel.1
Appearance
A tashtari's body is covered in supple filaments that produce phosphorescent lights.1
Ecology
Tashtaris communicate among themselves and coordinate their hunts with their bioluminescence. They can fire a laser-like beam from a focusing membrane in their mouth, which they evolved to hunt small prey, but they're willing to tackle bigger ones as well if the circumstances allow.1
Tashtaris hunt at night and spend the day basking on tall treetops, storing the gathered energy in a photoenergetic node near their throat. This behaviour helps them offset the caloric demands of their muzzle laser.1
Tashtaris live in packs consisting of a father, mother, juvenile offspring and close relatives. Newly-matured tashtaris leave their packs to seek mates elsewhere.1
Society
Tashtaris have been domesticated and spread across the galaxy. When brought to a planet with high solar intake, they can become dangerous and aggressive. The focusing membrane and photoenergetic node of a tashtari can be harvested and used in biotech; they are difficult to artificially replicate, but conservation efforts have kept the tashtaris from being hunted to extinction.1
