Endlings are spectral undead that arise from a species that was driven to extinction through unnatural means.1

Appearance

Endlings resemble larger, incorporeal versions of how they used to look like in life.1

Ecology

Endlings appear immediately after the last individual of a species dies. Their true nature is unclear: some xenobiologists believe that they are ghosts of the last survivors, while others hypothesise that they are unliving embodiments of a species' sorrow. Depending on how they died out, endlings can be divided into:1

  • desolation endlings, which were driven extinct when technology destroyed their habitat, and possess the ability to destroy technology and artificial structures.1
  • invasion endlings, which were hunted to extinction by unnatural predators like colonists and invasive species, and develop vicious combat process.2
  • plague endlings, which were wiped out by a disease, and can inflict a poison whose symptoms closely match those of this disease.2

Endlings cannot be destroyed by violence, which only causes them to temporarily dematerialise. The only way to put endlings to rest is to find the reason why they went extinct, then perform an action to set right whatever prevents them from moving on, something which is never the same between different species of endling.2
