Derelict shades are undead creatures formed from starships lost with all hands. Although derelict shades are not true ghosts (as the souls of the crew have moved on), the terror of their deaths combines fragments of their souls into an undead creature shaped like their old ship. Derelict shades are cunning and cruel, and seek to spread their pain onto other ships. They usually avoid large fleets and eagerly prey upon lone ships, turning them into more derelict shades.
