Chomurks, also known as sunchasers, are a species of hive-minded magical beasts with a unique, dangerous life cycle involving pushing asteroids or starships into stars.1

Appearance

A chomurk resembles an isopod with a colourful articulated shell and two sets of cross-shaped mandibles. A ridge running down their back ends at a cylindrical biothruster which can unleash powerful blasts of flame and force. A chomurk is 8 feet long and weighs 2000 pounds.1

Ecology

When a chomurk lands on a small astronomical object, it begins eating everything it could find, preferring organic matter. With sufficient food, it can reproduce via parthenogenesis, creating a clone that matures within a day. Once the hive grows to at least 32 members, some will merge into a thruster-mound, which begins to push the object into a decaying orbit toward the nearest star, while the non-merged chomurks protect the thruster-mound and absorb solar radiation to empower themselves. When their erstwhile home approaches the star, the non-merged chomurks will launch themselves off into outer space to hibernate until they can find a new object and begin the process. Those within a thruster-mound willingly sacrifice themselves in the star's heat for the good of the hive, alongside any other resident of the astronomical object.1
