Magic item
Magic items are created objects whose functionality is generated solely by magic. They differ from technology, which functions solely through the application of science, and hybrid items, which work through a combination of both science and magic. Magic items that are worn on the body generate magical fields that interfere with each other. If more than two such items (known commonly as "worn magic items") are donned simultaneously, all of them cease to function. This limitation interestingly does not apply to magic items carried in the hand (known colloquially as "held magic items"), or those integrated into a magical or hybrid weapon or armor (e.g. weapon fusions, armor upgrades, or augmentations). Additionally, consumable magic items (those that have an immediate or temporary effect) also do not create these magical fields.1
Artifacts
Some incredibly potent magic items are categorized as artifacts. These are incredibly rare (often unique), and their manufacture is generally beyond the capability of mortals. Their destruction cannot be accomplished by normal means, and generally requires a specific ritual or method. Even finding an artifact is incredibly rare and is always an event of hightened historical importance. Artifacts seem to have their own intelligence and fate, which causes them to disappear and appear unpredictably at significant moments.23 Some of the better known artifacts include the Book of Unwritten Truths and the Trafodi Paradox.4
