Kahlannal is a city located deep in the Pact Worlds sun, home to the peaceful, telepathic anassanois.1

Geography

Most of Kahlannal is made of a silvery metal or pearlescent material, and both channel light, so shadows are rare in Kahlannal. The city is divided into seven disc-shaped districts, connected to each other by conduits which contains tunnels for travel by foot, small vehicles and magtrains. All discs were designed to be self-sufficient and contains essential buildings, in case one or more of them were destroyed; the anassanois have exploited these redundancies to increase efficiency.1

Government

Since the Kahlannal's arrival in the Golarion system, it has been ruled by the Protectors, who initially consisted of the original crew and later their chosen successors. Over time, the Protectors came to be seen as saints, direct agents of their god Raethu, and were granted more and more power and responsibility, to the point that Raethu's worship faded behind the veneration of Protectors past and present as a holy pantheon of ancestors. They govern Kahlannal from the Spire, a massive building that serve as the security, infrastructure and bureaucratic hub for the entire city, while the Grand Protectors' Shrine serves as the centre of Protector veneration. The clerics at the Grand Protectors' Shrine keep detailed records of the Protectors and the law, coordinate activities among the Protectors' personal shrines, and carry out tasks that the Protectors lack time to do.1

Civic authorities in Kahlannal are elected by merit, reviewed by the Protectors and the clerics of the Grand Protectors' Shrine. This job is difficult and underpaid, and the staff constantly rotates so no one could become entrenched in one position and multiple people can do the same function.1

Criminals in Kahlannal are encouraged to atone for their misdeeds and reflect on the damage they caused so they could learn a better way. Those that have a particularly difficult time doing so are sent to retraining facilities; Kahlannal does not have a true prison.1

History

The Kahlannal began life as a generation ship among countless others fleeing Anassan, a star deep in the Vast that went nova. Carrying ten thousand passengers in psiostasis and 200 crew members that took decades-long shifts running the ship, the Kahlannal's mission was to transport its cargo to a distant star similar to Anassan that would serve as a new home for the anassanois.1

The Kahlannal eventually arrived in the Golarion system and entered the sun, where it was caught in a solar storm. The crew and ageing defences could not withstand the damage, and although the anassanois were safe, the ship's electronic components were irreparably destroyed, and it was impossible to leave the sun or communicate with anyone else.1

Over the centuries, the Kahlannal transformed from a starship to a city. The crew member who protected the passengers from the solar storm were lauded as heroes, becoming the first Protectors.1

People

As the anassanois of Kahlannal lost contact with the rest of their species and forgot their entire history before they came to Anassan, their culture has greatly deviated from its origin.1

Kahlannal does not have industries or resources beyond what it needs to sustain itself indefinitely; it is likely that it once had a means of expansion, but any such system would have been lost in the solar storm.1

Concerning the direction for their future, the aanassanois are divided into two factions: the Traditionalists who feel that their race has thrived despite isolation, and the Amiants who push for interaction with other civilisations beyond Kahlannal.1
