Jakkerants, also called javelin squids, are a feared species of ambush predators native to Utraneus.1

Appearance

A jakkerant's mantle and head are shaped like an arrowhead. Its skin colour is normally pale brown, but can be changed via manipulation of chromatophores in the jakkerant's skin; when aggressive, this colour oscillates from red to violet. Seven eyes ring the base of its head, and between each pair of eyes is a tentacle twice the jakkerant's length. Its gladius is hard and chitinous like mother-of-pearl and extends through its mantle, forming a point at the jakkerant's rear and smaller spikes that run between each eye and along the tentacles. Each tentacle has a jawless mouth that can slough meat off bones and shoot acidic water.1

Although primarily aquatic creatures, jakkerants can also move on land by standing upright on their tentacles, keeping their shape out of the water with their gladius. The average jakkerant is 3-1/2 feet long and weighs 50 pounds.1

Ecology

Jakkerants, despite their size, are powerful hunters and scavengers, willing to take on larger prey. They spend most of their lives travelling alone or in pairs, occasionally gathering in groups to mate or hunt big or numerous prey. They communicate by changing their colour.1
