Ja noi are oni that take the form of large, red-skinned hobgoblins. They can be distinguished from normal hobgoblins by ridges on their brow and forehead, a facial grimace, and their size: ja noi stand over 6 feet tall and weigh roughly 220 pounds. Ja noi are particularly pugnacious, and while they don't mind commanding war machines or starships, they prefer to personally lead hobgoblin infantry in battle. Hobgoblins treat ja noi as mighty heroes and perfect expressions of their form. Ja noi and hobgoblins breed true, producing fertile offspring known as kanabo, who are capable of breeding with both hobgoblins and ja noi.
