Feeder fungus
Feeder fungus
(Creature)
Feeder fungi are a species of ambulatory, predatory fungi.1
Appearance
A feeder fungus resembles a very thick lichen with shoots of long, coiled frond-like grasping tendrils. Shorter stalks end in hand-sized spore pods. Young feeder fungi are more mobile with shorter tendrils.1
Ecology
Feeder fungi are ambush predators and hunt with their spores, which have a sedative effect. Once a feeder fungus has accumulated more than it needs, it produces and implants a special pod into a hollowed corpse, which grows into a new feeder fungus. Young feeder fungi are encouraged to disperse, as they are repelled by the spores of others of their kind. They mature after making their first kill.1
