Talk:Playable Species

From StarfinderWiki

Should this page even exist under this name? I don't think the PathfinderWiki has a "Playable ancestries" article. If Category:Playable Species needs to link to a "Main article:", then it should probably link to Race (which should be retitled to "Species" or possibly, if implementing the SF2e Playtest is appropriate, "Ancestry"). In any case, both "Playable Species" and "Category:Playable Species" are miscapitalized. StarfinderWiki:Use lower caseDescriptivist (talk) 08:27, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

Short answer: no, it can be deleted altogether. Species already correctly redirects to Race, and this was meant to turn into a larger project to change mentions of "race" into mentions of "species", since as of 2022, Paizo switched to using "species". But between not following through with that project, the impending end of SF1, and the change to using "ancestry" instead of either of the other terms as of SF2, the page is no longer necessary.

Personally, I continue to prefer "species" as SF setting appropriate, but I understand the reasoning behind the change.

Also: "playable" is debatably appropriate for the wikis, of course. I think it's useful info and not horribly crunchy to note some intelligent species have stats for making player characters; the number of known intelligent species that don't have PC stats is fairly low, though. But that's a discussion for another time & place. Petronius (talk) 02:47, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

  • It's perfectly appropriate!! Do you know if Category:Races currently contains non-playable races? If so, then I assume the Wiki should have
    • a Category for sapient peoples, playable and unplayable
      • a Category for 1e playable species
      • a Category for 2e playable ancestries

Category:Races does not contain non-playable races directly at a glance--but it does contain several subcategories that are. Various extraplanar beings (e.g. inevitables), mostly, at a glance.

I do know of several canon sapient species that have their own languages, but no canon (PC-) playable statblock. Inherited ones from other lore (mi-go, ythian) but also frujai, garaggakal, grioth, hallas, kothama, and sapient purple orbs (who speak Orbian. seriously. AA4 page 104!) I love the latter, and I know there's at least one playable non-canon statlock on SF Infinite.

Some of those languages existing could be errors; for example, sylvan shows up in at least one creature statblock (AA4 page 70), but is probably an error (from carrying over PF info mistakenly) since it isn't mentioned other places you'd expect. But I think it's a pretty strong indication such creatures exist, even if they aren't fully categorized on the wiki. Petronius (talk) 00:51, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
