The Riven Shroud is a partially-damaged, mostly-abandoned Dyson sphere located in a remote portion of a galactic arm yet accessible in Near Space.

Geography

Most of the Riven Shroud appears intact except for a ruined gash, rent open to the vacuum of space. Its life support systems do not always function, leading to the atmosphere being toxic or the gravity unstable in some areas, and the sphere's automated defensive systems sometimes attack unprovoked.

Around the Riven Shroud is a massive graveyard of starships, among which the most ancient share the same design as the Shroud. Most of the more recent ships, carrying looters or settlers, were destroyed by rivals or the Shroud's defenses, but some appear abandoned with no trace of their crew.

Inhabitants

Isolated communities of scientists and scavengers are scattered around the habitable portions of the Riven Shroud. Some of them, like the aatevak, qotraua, and xixinnt, claim to be descendants of the Riven Shroud's builders, but their biology and the Shroud's architecture do not match, and this unlikely claim cannot be verified. The space around the Shroud is haunted, allegedly by the residents of the planets used as material to construct it, and seekers of the Shroud's secrets periodically invade it.
