The Locus is a unique magical astronomical object in the Vast. Like a star, it gives off heat, radiation and forms a gravity well that created the planets in the Locus system and their biota.1

From afar, the Locus resembles a spherical pale star surrounded by gauzy tendrils, though detailed scans reveal that the most intense energy is shaped like an uneven hourglass laid on its size. The Locus also exudes a low-range hum, audible in scans or in resonant structures, that soothes creatures that hear or feel it.1

The Locus' heat, radiation and gravity are akin to those of a star, but unlike actual stars, it ejects chaotic magic instead of plasma. Flying near the Locus can result in unpredictable magical effects, especially when magic is used.1

Scientists aboard Locus-1 have discovered that the Locus is made out of soulstuff, a combination of quintessence and positive energy with new, unique properties. It permeates the entire Locus system with magical, life-giving energy.1

The Locus is measured to be younger than the galaxy, and is speculated to be either all that remains of an incomplete construct or the corpse of a deity who tried to defy the cycle of life and death. Both of these hypotheses have neither been confirmed nor refuted.1
