Ratheren is the former moon of Ferrantus-4, a planet consumed by a black hole known as the Maw. It now orbits the Maw, and is home to the ferran natives of Ferrantus-4 that survived the catastrophe.1

Geography

Ratheren is mostly made of dark stone, crisscrossed with deep crevasses. Its atmosphere is thin, and its gravity is irregular, ranging from as strong as Golarion to twice as strong.1

History

Ratheren was first settled by ferrans when they achieved limited spaceflight and built a self-sustaining research station on the moon to study the Maw. When the ferrans, decades later, discovered that the Maw was on the path of colliding with a rogue black hole-like entity and becoming a quasar, their leader decided to hurl Ferrantus-4 into the Maw, believing that doing so will transform the ferrans into more advanced beings. When Ferrantus-4 was consumed, Ratheren was pushed out of the event horizon by a burst of energy.1

Inhabitants

Ratheren has no native life, and is now inhabited by ferran survivors who try to eke out an existence on their base while trying to discover whether their people still live within the Maw. The base's squat buildings and enclosed walkways now sprawl almost a quarter of Ratheren's surface. Food and oxygen are provided by hydroponic gardens, water purifiers clean liquid waste and water collected from Ratheren's ice caps, and geothermal power plants collect energy from deep fissures. Day and night are artificially controlled to simulate Ferrantus-4's original cycle.1
