Transponder
A transponder is a technological identification device that is integrated into communication devices large and small that identifies the sender of a message. It gives the sender's identity and location so that the message can be properly replied to. Transponders are the primary way that starships identify themselves. These starship transponders can be switched off, but normally this means that starships cannot send or receive messages, although it also means that it cannot be identified or tracked by normal means. Certain criminal elements employ counterfeit transponders to masquerade their identity or hide it completely.12
